Home Project Work
As Apple support professionals, sometimes people come to us because they have just one project that they need to complete, they are not looking for ongoing mac support at the time. So ‘Project Work’ is simply the ability to use us for a specific project at a mutually agreed upon day(s) with a beginning and an end date.
In some instances, customers use these projects to get comfortable with us and see the level of experience we have before making a larger and more long-term commitment. In other instances, a company will hire us because they have internal staff that doesn’t have the expertise we have or are overloaded with other work. We can come in and take over a specific project from start to finish, including documentation, and then move on after that project is completed to your satisfaction.
Project Work Examples
We have performed all different types of project work in Apple Business environments that vary greatly in scope and length, some examples of project work we have done for other companies are as follows:
Mobile Device Management
We’ve done many projects for school systems, hospitals and small to large business consulting with them on how to properly manage their mobile devices both issued by the school, hospital or company themselves or BYOD (bring your own device). The entails sitting down with the customer and coming up with a reasonable plan for management, creating user policy, implementing the MDM management tool of choice such as JAMF or Apple’s own MDM program, etc.
School Computer Lab
We’ve done several projects for school systems that have ranged from unboxing brand new computers, setting them up on their network, installing an automated software update package to protect the core operating system from misuse to complete management of their network with remote access capability. Like with every project this starts with a discovery/planning meeting with the customer to go over their goals and exactly what they are looking for as an end result. From there a plan is created and discussed with the customer and finally agreed upon to go forward. These types of projects generally happen over holiday breaks or the Summer months when the kids are not in school.
Wireless Access Point
These projects range from 3 WAPs to 30+ and start with a special tool to map out the correct locations for each WAP, then we investigate the current network infrastructure and figure out how we will configure all the access points to correctly work in the already installed network environment. Prior to us installing the WAPs there needs to be data cabling that needs to be installed by our sister company Up To Code Data Cabling or a vendor of choice by the customer. After the cabling is installed and certified we go about physically installing all the WAPs in the office/school space. All WAPs are tested for proper use and updated regularly when the firmware is updated from the manufacturer
Filemaker Pro database
We have done some very simple Filemaker Pro database programs to very complex with many plug-ins and various pieces of software to interact with other software. The process starts with a planning session between TR and the client to go over end result desires. From that point, we go back to our office and sketch out a rough outline to meet the needs of the customer’s end goal or what we call a design document. From that point we meet back with the customer to approve our design document, make changes, etc. and the project begins. All along we have milestone check-up meeting so the customer can see the progress we are making and continue to make adds and changes if any are needed. In the end, the customer gets delivered a custom and proprietary program that is useful and adds to increasing the customer’s bottom line. Lastly, we provide training and documentation for the customers so they are not 100% reliant on us for any reason.
Proactive Machine Management
This involves TR installing an agent on each computer and server that runs 7/24/365 and monitors many critical hardware functions with specific thresholds of importance, once these thresholds are achieved an alert is sent to the customer telling them there is a problem and a simple suggestion on how to fix it. It is up to the client to act on these alerts of hiring us to come in and resolve the issue for them. Additionally, there are automated software updates and upgrades that get installed each day/week/month that are pre-vetted for compatibility (this is not 100% foolproof) so you are always working on the latest and greatest software revisions and patches. Many customers have bought into this program because it is a great value for what they receive and cuts down on employees spending their time updating and upgrading their machines or chasing problems that they should be better using their time getting their specific job title work done.
